HBO Critical Care Nurse

Position Title: Clinical Hyperbaric Critical Care Registered Nurse

Position Summary: Performs the duties of a critical care nurse in a hyperbaric environment.

Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for performing a hyperbaric risk assessment on all critical care patients
2. Responsible for patient education prior to hyperbaric treatments.
3. Maintains awareness of patient's needs and conditions.
4. Responsible for a thorough understanding of the effects of pressure on equipment used to treat critically ill or injured patients. E.g. monitors, N pumps, ventilators and BP cuffs.
5. Responsible for a thorough understanding of the physiological effects of pharmaceutical products in an environment of increased pressure.
6. Responsible for collaborating with the supervising hyperbaric physician to achieve the desired treatment goals.
7. Provides guidance for the facility to successfully pass various hospital inspections i.e. JCAHO,UHMS
8. Works with hospital staff to ensue facility is meeting criteria for hospital guidelines.

Minimum Educational Requirements: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Possess current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment. Must have attended an Introductory to Clinical Hyperbaric Medicine Course.

Experience: Minimum of one year critical care experience.

Skills: CCRN, ACLS, PALS, Certification as a Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse is preferred. Excellent communication skills. Ability to work with physicians and other health team members in a variety of settings. Ability to provide nursing care to all age groups.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Hyperbaric Medical Doctors and Program Directors.

Supervision Given: Directly supervises the inside observer and/or hyperbaric technician during the treatment of critically ill or injured patients.

Responsibility for Confidentiality: Responsible for the confidentiality of all patient information and protects the privacy of all patients. Responsible for ensuring employee and proprietary confidentiality.

Responsibility for Accuracy: Responsible for complete and accurate documentation and direct patient care.

Pressure Factor: Intermittent work pace and varying degrees of stress.

Contact with Others: Has frequent contact with patients, families, physicians and other members of the health care team. Represents the department and organization with a positive image.

Working Conditions: Must be able to tolerate confined and uncomfortable spaces for short and long periods of time.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to pass a dive physical. Must be able to lift from floor level to stretcher. Requires standing, walking, pushing, crouching, kneeling, bending, lifting, reaching at arms length and the ability to handle piercing and cutting instruments.
